Description
This listing describes a group of seven memorials located in St Mary's Churchyard in Wotton-under-Edge, dating from the 18th or 19th century. The memorials are made of limestone and are situated north of St Katherine's Chapel.
The first item is a chest tomb from the 18th century, featuring a cyma cornice and quarter balusters, with its base sunk below the grass level. The inscriptions on this tomb are not legible and it is located about 25 feet northeast of the chapel.
The second item is another chest tomb, which has a date of 1818 and the name Rickards is partially decipherable. It has a cavetto cornice and quarter balusters and is situated due west of the first tomb.
The third item is an 18th-century chest tomb with inscription panels that are not legible, also featuring quarter balusters. This tomb is located about 25 feet northwest of the chapel and 12 feet from the path to the west.
The fourth item is a chest tomb from the 17th century, with a date of 1684 and the name Austin partially decipherable. It has a flat pitched top, quarter balusters, and double inscription panels, positioned immediately south of the previous tomb.
The fifth item is an 18th-century chest tomb that has quarter balusters, double inscription panels, and a deep cavetto base. It is located immediately east of the fourth item and about 11 feet north of the chapel.
The sixth item is a raised ledger slab dated 1792, with an inscription dedicated to Rose. This slab is positioned immediately south of the second item.
The seventh item is a small chest tomb from the 19th century, featuring decorative rococo panels and floriated corners, with inscriptions that are not legible. It lies about 10 feet west of the chapel and is aligned with the third and fourth items.
