Description

12 and 14 Southgate Street in Gloucester are two shops and dwellings, currently functioning as a shop (No.12) and a bank (No.14). No.14 is now part of the bank premises that also include Nos. 16 and 18 Southgate Street, which are adjacent to the left. The buildings date from the early 19th century and have undergone alterations in the 20th century. They are constructed of brick with an ashlar facing on the street front and have a slate roof.

The structure is three storeys high with a cellar, featuring an early 20th-century shop front for No.12 and a late 20th-century front for No.14. The upper floors consist of four bays, with the two bays of No.12 being narrower than those of No.14, likely reflecting the differing widths of two medieval burgage plots. There is a moulded string course at the second and third-floor window sill levels, along with a crowning cornice and a blocking course above. The windows are sashes with glazing bars (3x4 panes) that decrease in height from the first to the third floors, except for the first floor of No.14, where the sashes were replaced around 1960 with a large tripartite window featuring a central sash flanked by narrower sashes with glazing bars. The interior of No.12 was not inspected, while No.14 has been relined and refitted in the 20th century.
