Description
The remains of the precinct wall of Llanthony Priory are located south of the outer gatehouse, on the west side of the outer court. This wall dates from the early 16th century and is constructed of red brick in English bond, featuring patterns made from vitrified headers. The exterior includes a crenellated design, although the original weathered coping stones have been removed. Approximately 1 meter below modern ground level, the base of the wall is built above the revetment of the former outer moat. On the outer face of the wall, about 18 meters south of the gatehouse, there are three decorative patterns in vitrified brick: a wayside cross on the right, lozenge patterns on the left, and chequer patterns in the middle. This wall is one of the earliest known examples of brickwork in Gloucestershire, representing a style more commonly found in the southeast of England.
