Description
The remains of the precinct wall of Llanthony Priory are located north of the inner gatehouse. This wall dates from the 15th century and was rebuilt or extended in the 17th and 18th centuries, with later repairs. It is constructed of ashlar and brick.
On the exterior, the low central section of the west wall features five equally spaced buttresses made of ashlar, which formed the west wall of the west range within the outer court. A cobbled floor is associated with a cattle shelter that existed on the site from 1830 to 1880. The northern part of the west wall and the west end of the north wall are made of 18th-century masonry, which incorporates a reset medieval angle-buttress at the north-west corner.
The north wall continues eastward, constructed of blue lias limestone for about 12 meters on either side of a bricked-up doorway. This section formed the rear wall of a 15th-century range with a timber-framed upper storey that was demolished in 1800. Beyond this former range, the wall continues eastward in 17th-century masonry, linking to a cross wall that returns to the south-west corner of the remains of the Tythe Barn.
