Description

No. 13 College Green is a house built between 1735 and 1736 by John Pasco. It is constructed of brick with stone details and features a slate roof with dormers and gable-end stacks. The building has a double-depth layout, with an extension at the south end that connects to No. 14 College Green.

The exterior has two storeys, an attic, and a cellar. The front facade consists of three bays, made of red brick in English bond, and includes a raised stone band at the first-floor level. The eaves cornice is coved and moulded, returning at both ends. The entrance is located in the right-hand bay, accessed by a flight of four stone steps. The doorcase features a moulded architrave, a frieze with alternating paterae and grooved triglyphs, and a pediment. The other bays contain sashes with glazing bars (three panes by four panes) in flush timber frames. Above the outer bays are gabled roof dormers, each with a pair of casements that also have glazing bars.

Inside, there is a stone-paved entrance hall and an open well staircase with a closed string, suspended newels, and barleysugar balusters. On the first floor, timber framing from the south end of No. 14 is exposed due to the extension. The interior also features several 18th-century six-panel doors and a brick vaulted cellar that contains a fragment of a medieval masonry wall, including part of a door jamb with a stopped chamfer.

The house was built by John Pasco, a master builder from Moulsey, Surrey, as a speculative project in partnership with Barnabas Gunn, the cathedral organist, on land leased from the bishop.
