Description
Bishop Hooper's Monument is a Grade II listed structure located in St Mary's Square, Gloucester. It commemorates Bishop Hooper, who was burned at the stake in 1555. The monument was constructed between 1861 and 1863 by the architects Medland and Maberley and is made of ashlar stone.
The design features a square base with a moulded plinth and weathered top. At each corner, there are buttressed piers topped with pinnacles. Between the piers, there are open, foiled arches and gablets. The entire structure is crowned by a tall, crocketed spire with a finial. Inside the "tabernacle" canopy, there is a slightly larger than life-size statue of Bishop Hooper, created by Edward W Thornhill of Dublin, which faces east. The monument was funded by public subscription.
