Description

10 College Green is a house built between 1735 and 1736, with later alterations, designed by John Pasco. It features red brick in Flemish bond with stone details and a slate roof with dormers. The building has a double-depth layout, with a wing projecting to the left that contains the entrance, positioned near the angle of the L-shaped front.

The exterior consists of two storeys, an attic, and a cellar. There is a stone band at the first-floor level and a coped parapet. The plain doorway has a six-panel door with fielded panels and a rectangular fanlight with vertical glazing bars. To the left, there is a sash window with glazing bars (3x4 panes) on each floor and a roof dormer. To the right of the wing, the main block features two sashes with glazing bars (3x4 panes) on each floor and a roof dormer. The sashes are set in openings with rubbed brick flat arched heads and raised key stones, and there are early 19th-century wrought-iron window guards on the first floor of the main block.

Inside, the entrance hall is located to the right, leading to an early 18th-century open well staircase that reaches full height. This staircase has solid strings, suspended newels, column-on-vase balusters, and a toad back handrail. The ground floor room in the north wing is panelled with a fielded panel dado and plain panels above, featuring a moulded cornice and a chimney-piece surround of raised and fielded panels with a fluted key block in the lintel. On the first floor, a similar chimney piece is found in a room in the main block, along with some 18th-century joinery in other rooms.

The house was built by John Pasco, a master builder from Moulsey, Surrey, as a speculative project in partnership with Barnabas Gunn, the cathedral organist, on land leased from the cathedral chapter.
