Description

The building at 9-17 Worcester Street comprises five terraced houses, now adapted for commercial and residential use as shops, offices, and flats. Built in 1825, it has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries, including conversion to shops in the later 19th century. The construction is primarily brick with stone detailing; the fronts of numbers 11 to 13 have been painted, while numbers 15 and 17 are stuccoed. The roofs are slate, with brick stacks. It is a double-depth block with later extensions at the rear.

The exterior is three storeys high. The ground floor of number 9 features a semicircular arched doorway with a fanlight and panelled door on the right, alongside a 20th-century shop window and doorway to the left, framed by late 19th-century pilasters and a fascia with consoles at each end. The remaining units have shop fronts of various dates. A continuous stone string course runs horizontally at first-floor sill level, partially obscured by the later shop fascias.

The upper floors present as an arcade, with a segmental arched recess in each of the two-bay former houses. Above the arcading is a continuous, stone-coped parapet. The first floor of each bay has a sash window with 3x4 panes, set within an opening with a flat-arched head constructed from five raised-and-stepped voussoirs. The second floor has sash windows with 3x3 panes, within openings featuring brick flat arches and projecting stone sills.

The interior has not been inspected.
