Description
The Stables at Staunton Court, built in 1755 and now used as a store, feature Flemish bond brickwork with a brick-nogged timber framing extension at the rear, set on a stone plinth, and topped with a tiled roof. The building is arranged in two units and has a loft. The front faces the farmyard and includes a brick plinth, with a boarded stable door on each side of the center, accessed by one stone step. Above the doors is a 2-light fanlight with a cambered rubbed brick arch. There are small, 2-light windows on either side, with the left window glazed and the right fitted with shutters, both having heads shaped like the doors. A diagonally-set datestone is located in the center, and the eaves feature dentil detailing. The left corner has been later chamfered. On the right side, there are stone steps with open risers leading to a quarter landing for a boarded gable door, which has a plain iron handrail. A circular owl-hole is present in the gable apex. Inside, the building has a 3-bay roof supported by king-post trusses with double struts on each side, and two pairs of butt purlins without a ridge member. The rear lean-to has two-panel high framing and a boarded door accessed by steps, likely added in the late 18th century, while the gable steps and door to the stable were added in the late 19th century. The stables form a group with the house, dovecote, church, and other farm buildings.
