Description
The Price and Hawkins monuments are chest tombs located in the churchyard about 15 meters west of the north-west corner of the tower of the Church of St. James. The Price monument commemorates Job Price, who died in 1807, and includes a flat lid with a moulded edge, raised rectangular panel sides, elongated pilasters at the ends, and a raised panel on the stem with pendant leaves on the returns. It features a moulded plinth and originally stood on a large stone base, which has since been removed. This monument also honors John Price of Ryal, a noted breeder of Hereford cattle who died in 1843, and Elizabeth Price, Job's daughter, who died in 1827.
The Hawkins monument has a weathered lid with a step and a flat top with a square edge. It features projecting plain square corner pilasters with moulded capitals and bases, and slightly raised rectangular panels with chamfered corners. The plinth has a plain top and rests on a large stone base that once supported railings. This monument also commemorates various children.
