Description
The Thurston monument is a chest tomb located in the churchyard, about 2 meters east of the southeast corner of the porch of the Church of St. James. It commemorates Mary Thurston, who died in 1759. The tomb is made of stone and features a flat lid with a moulded edge and remnants of rococo carving on the south side, which originally included a head in the top center. The north side has a raised rectangular panel with scalloped corners. The tomb is supported by tall, quarter square corner balusters that have leaf decoration on the stem. The east end mirrors the north side, while the west side displays rococo decoration. The base is simply moulded, and the sides show signs of weathering.
