Description
The Old Tannery by Millend House is a former tannery that is now used as a store. Its date is uncertain but it is possibly from the 16th or 17th century. The building features a timber frame, is clad in horizontal weatherboard, and has a slate roof, set against a sandstone rubble wall at the stream side. Although it appears undistinguished from the outside, it is reputed to contain three true crucks with pegged cross braces and wind bracing in the walls and roof. The tannery is located near the center of Blakeney, right next to a stream that runs below street level and goes under the street. It is situated slightly north of and set back from Millend House, which is not included in the listing. Access to the interior has not been possible, but it may represent an early example of industrial activity in the village.
