Description
The Church of Christchurch is a church built in 1816, with an apsidal chancel added in 1884. It features ashlar stonework and a slate roof. The structure includes a west tower, a nave with an apsidal chancel, and a broad north aisle that has an organ loft at the east end. The three-stage tower, designed by Henry Poole, has string courses and single short lancet windows with hood moulds on the first stage, as well as clock faces on the south, west, and north sides below the belfry windows. The tower is topped with an embattled parapet and corner pinnacles. The sloping walls from the tower create a symmetrical appearance from the front, while concealing an asymmetrical layout at the back. A single-storey room in the southwest corner also has an embattled parapet. The windows of the aisle and nave are pointed with simple Y tracery, while the chancel windows are in the Decorated style. Inside, the nave and aisle have plastered barrel vault ceilings divided by two very slender cast iron columns, and the chancel ceiling is boarded. The font, dating from 1884, is also located within the church. This is the first 19th-century church to be built in the Forest of Dean.
