Description

Holmdene is a house that is attached on the south gable end to cottages in Lower Croft. It was originally a smaller house on the left side, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, and was enlarged, likely in the late 18th century, with alterations made in the early to mid-19th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubble stone with alternating flush quoins and has a stone slate roof, though the original end stacks and ridge stack on the right-hand extension have been replaced with concrete and are now offset.

The house is a single long range, two storeys high with an attic. The earlier house on the left side features a small gable with a two-light stone mullion window, and below it, there is another two-light stone mullion window with a transom on both the first and ground floors. To the right of the gable and at the far right, there are two-storey 19th-century square bays with tripartite sash windows consisting of 2/4/2 panes, framed with shouldered ashlar surrounds. Between the first-floor windows, there is a two-light wood mullion window with a transom, and below, a 19th-century gabled porch made of wood with a door featuring two long recessed panels. Additionally, there are three small hipped dormers with paired casements to the right of the gable.
