Description
The Downs is a house built in the early to mid-19th century, with one outbuilding dated "P:P/1836". It was constructed by the Playne family. The building features rubble stone and has a double range tile roof with an embattled front parapet above a cornice. There are four tall stone gable stacks and two additional stacks on the right wing. The facade is nearly symmetrical, with a square bay that projects forward in the center of the main block. The house has two storeys and four windows: three in the main section that are pointed 2-light with intersecting tracery and stone-mullions beneath square hoodmoulds, and one canted bay with four similar lights on the right wing. The central entrance is located in the projecting bay and features a moulded Tudor arch under a hoodmould, with a recessed single door designed to match the windows. The right wing is partly roughcast and includes a conservatory to the east and an oriel window on the west side. The rear wing, which was formerly stables or a similar structure, is now part of the house and has a wooden arcade on its west side.
