Description

The Lodge is a Grade II listed building located in Cowley, Birdlip Village. It was built in 1845 and designed by Richard Pace of Lechlade, serving as the lodge for the Witcombe Park Estate. The building was extended in the late 19th century, though 20th-century extensions are not considered of special interest.

The Lodge features coursed squared and dressed limestone with slightly relieved quoins and a banded red and grey tile roof, topped with a brick stack. It has a rectangular plan and stands two storeys high. The north gable end showcases two lancet windows with stopped hoods flanking a projecting gabled porch, with two similar windows above. The porch contains a four-centred arched doorway, which is now blocked, and has a moulded hood with plain shield stops. The gable displays the Hick family heraldic shield, and the barge boarding is pierced and cusped.

On the east-facing gable, which faces the main road, there are two 2-light stone-mullioned casements with pointed-headed lights on the first floor. The west front features lancet and paired lancet windows. A plank door with fillets is set within a four-centred arched surround towards the south-facing gable end of the original building. All windows are adorned with diamond-leaded panes and carved spandrels. The building has a single axial stack, and the interior has not been inspected.
