Description

The West Banqueting House to Old Campden House, built around 1627 by Sir Baptist Hicks, is a significant structure made of rubble with ashlar dressings and a Cotswold stone roof. It is one of a pair of pavilions located at each end of the great terrace, featuring a single storey on the terrace side and a large undercroft on the opposite side. The terrace front includes a blocked arcade and a small later doorway, along with an elaborate pierced parapet. There are barley sugar chimneys, with two on the north gable and three on the south. The other elevation has a central projection and two attic gables, each with two light stone mullioned windows. Inside, the building retains fragments of plaster work and panelling, including a high-quality relief frieze, and the wagon roof structure is intact. There is also an unusual small mezzanine chamber at the rear, which has a fireplace and mysterious access. This elaborate garden house reflects the quality of the now-destroyed mansion.
