Description
The boundary walls of Bedfont House, which include a grotto in the south-east corner, date partly from the early 18th century and mostly from the 19th century. The 18th-century section is located at the north end facing Calf's Lane and is constructed of rubble with chamfered coping. It features a segment-headed doorway opposite the south wing of the Court House. This section of the wall varies in height from about 7 to 11 feet and measures over 30 yards long, with a stepped design at one point.
The 19th-century extension ramps down from the earlier wall and consists of a high rubble retaining wall that is approximately 70 yards long, leading to a large rockery made from massive Pulhamite rocks. In the south-east corner, there is a wild-looking grotto with two chambers formed from this material. The wall is retained at the south end in rubble and at the north end in coursed rubble, measuring about 25 yards long and 10 feet high, featuring corner ball finials and a brick lining to the south.
