Description
This large barn, located approximately 70 meters east of St. Mary's Church at Castle Farm, likely dates from the 17th century. It is constructed of thin coursed rubble stone with alternating flush quoins and features a concrete tile roof with coped verges and saddlestones. The barn has large opposed central projecting cart entries, which are fitted with timber lintels and have corrugated iron doors. There is also a square opening with a timber lintel in the gable on the south side, while the north side is bricked up.
On each side of the barn, there are two plain buttresses that mark the bays, each with square vents. The gable ends contain square pitch holes, which are blocked on the east side, along with slit vents above them. The barn consists of seven bays and is supported by arch-braced collar trusses, which have three trenched purlins and largely renewed rafters. The outer four trusses feature strengthening braces that connect to the principals below the level of the lowest purlin.
