Description
The twelve monuments in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, located about one metre south of the south transept, date from the late 18th century to the early 19th century and are mostly made of limestone. From left to right, the headstones include: a) a headstone for Emma Blower, who died in 1818, featuring a plain segmental head; b) a headstone for Robert Cambray, who died in 1810, adorned with a winged angel's head and foliate scrollwork; c) a trefoil-headed sandstone headstone for Priscilla Cambray, who died in 1854, and Robert Cambray, who died in 1857; d) a plain headstone for John Wilkes, who died in 1781; e) a tall segmental-headed headstone for Thomas Cambray, which has an eroded inscription and shallowly carved decoration; f) a headstone for Thomas Cambray, who died in 1799, featuring a winged angel and foliate scrollwork in bold relief; g) a plain headstone for Richard Matthew, who died in 1806; and h) five 18th-century headstones, each topped with a winged angel's head. This row of monuments is part of a larger group situated beside the churchyard path.
