Description
This listing describes a row of eight headstones located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, approximately six meters west of the David Ansell monument in Great Rissington. These headstones are made of limestone and date from the mid to late 18th century.
The earlier headstones in the group feature segmental heads, while the later ones have canted heads. All eight headstones are adorned with winged cherubs' heads above their inscription plaques, with variations in detail. The decoration on the earlier headstones is typically in bolder relief compared to the later ones.
Notable headstones in the row include the second from the left, which has a small winged cherub's head with wings folded down, flanked by open bibles at the top. The fourth headstone from the left is the tallest in the group and also features a small winged cherub's head with down-folded wings, flanked by cherubs holding trumpets. This headstone has a sunken segmental-headed inscription plaque that includes the date 1746, surrounded by raised margins with stiff foliate decoration.
While most of the inscriptions are difficult to read, the one at the far right-hand end is dedicated to Peter (?) Cambray, who died in 1764. The headstone third from the right commemorates Robert Cambray, who died in 1772.
