Description

The building at 14, 16, and 18 Black Jack Street comprises a shop with residential flats above, dating from the late 18th century to the early/mid-19th century. The section to the right is constructed of limestone ashlar with a concrete tile roof and reconstituted stone stacks. The left-hand section has a lined-out stucco front and a concrete tile roof with a brick right-end stack.

To the right is a three-storey, four-window range. The first floor features four 19th-century two-pane sash windows with horns, set in plain reveals with stone sills. The second floor has four matching windows. The ground floor has an early 20th-century shopfront with a twelve-pane window above which are louvred panels. A stall riser has three cast-iron grilles, and a brass plate displays the lettering "SMITH". A four-panel door to the left has a single-pane overlight with painted glass lettering "SMITHS 6". A pair of plank doors to the right incorporates iron bar grille panels. The shopfront surround features four reeded pilaster strips, heavy console brackets flanking a frieze with a blind box and a moulded cornice.

The section to the left is three storeys and three windows wide. The first floor has three two-light timber casements with glazing bars in plain reveals, with the left window featuring a projecting cill and the two right windows shortened to accommodate the shopfront below. Three similar windows are on the second floor. The ground floor has an eight-pane sash with a matching reveal and a four-panel door with a single-pane overlight to the left. To the right, the shopfront has a plate glass window with round-section timber mullions with shaped bases and tops featuring brackets, and a ventilation grille above. A half-glazed door with a wrought-iron grille over the glass is accompanied by a cast-iron grille overlight. The tiled stall riser and reveal to the door are ornamented with lettered panels reading "PORK BUTCHERS" and "PICKLED TONGUES", and a painted tile panel depicting a pig's head, utilising Art Nouveau style tiles arranged in pilasters.

An entrance passage to the left of the shopfront has Art Nouveau ironwork above the opening, a simple wrought-iron gate, and a panel with etched lettering behind glass reading “HOME MADE SAUSAGES”. Similar panels in the friezes of both shopfronts display the lettering "JESSE SMITH & CO FAMILY BUTCHERS ESTABLISHED 1808". The interiors of the building have not been inspected.
