Description

Wendovers is a mid-16th century shop with workshops above, altered in the early 19th century to the front. The front is stuccoed, while the rear is constructed of coursed limestone rubble. The roof is covered with Welsh slate, and there are no visible stacks. It is a three-storey, three-window range. The first floor has three 19th-century sash windows with two panes to each sash, set within moulded architraves. The second floor has similar windows, but the tops of the architraves are cut off by the eaves. A late 19th or 20th-century shopfront occupies the ground floor, featuring large plate glass windows and a glazed door, set within pilaster strips with a frieze and cornice, now boxed-out. Rusticated quoins mark the left and right angles of the first and second floors. A 20th-century extension to the rear has increased the building’s floor area. Internally, the ground floor retains mid-16th century moulded cross beams, indicating an originally undivided room. A 20th-century staircase leads to the first floor, where a room remains undivided and features two beams with unstopped chamfers, along with a similar girding beam on the right side. A winder staircase runs to the second-floor workshop, where a 19th/20th-century roof structure is visible. There is internal access to No.6 Black Jack Street on the ground, first, and second floors.
