Description
Wendovers is a former house that has been converted into a shop with workshops above. It dates from the late 17th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone and features a Welsh slate roof, with two brick stacks on the rear wing.
It stands three storeys tall, including an attic and cellars, and has a three-window range. On the first floor, there are three 19th or early 20th century two-light timber mullion-and-transom windows with coloured glass in the upper lights, set in late 17th century chamfered stone surrounds. The original stone mullions and transoms have been cut out and replaced with concrete cills. The second floor has three 19th century two-light timber casements in similar stone surrounds.
The ground floor features one 19th century three-light ovolo-moulded stone mullion and transom window with 19th century glazing, a hoodmould, and a stone cill. There is also a raked dormer with a window that is now blocked. The entrance includes a 19th century half-glazed door with three pointed glazed lights in a chamfered stone surround, topped with a moulded stone floating cornice. There are two openings to the cellar, each fitted with 19th century iron grilles. Moulded strings run over the ground and first floors, with the ground floor string interrupted by a later hoodmould above the window. A moulded timber eaves cornice completes the exterior.
Inside, there is a late 17th century well staircase featuring turned balusters, an upstanding handrail, and square newels with incised moulding, extending from the ground to the second floors, with later repairs made to the balustrade at the bottom and top. The ground floor front has two chamfered beams, one of which features a step-stop, while the first and second floors have rough unchamfered beams. A late 18th century stone chimneypiece with a mid-19th century grate is located on the first floor front. The building also has a two-bay butt-purlin roof. Internally, it is linked to No. 4 Blackjack Street, which is also known as Wendovers, across the ground, first, and second floors.
