Description
The Pace Monument, located about 1 metre north of Matthews Monument in the churchyard of the Church of St. Lawrence, is a memorial dedicated to Sarah Pace, who died in 1805. It is made of limestone and features a narrow slab with short square piers that project in front and behind. The monument has moulded coping that rises in a curve to the centre, which originally had a finial that is now missing. The piers include recessed small circular panels, while the central slab has a long elliptical recessed panel with an inscription that reads: "In the midst of blooming Health/after a short illness/died SARAH wife of RICH. PACE of this Place Builder/December the 9 1805 Aged 43/Good God on what a slender thread/hang Mortal things." Sarah was the wife of architect and builder Richard Pace, who was active in the Lechlade area and created pattern books of house designs for his clients, as well as the "Lechlade" panelled door.
