Description
Woodbine Cottages, which include a water pump and trough, are two semi-detached cottages dating from the 18th century to early 19th century. Cottage No. 41, on the right, features a coursed, squared limestone facade, while the other walls are made of limestone rubble. Cottage No. 40 is constructed of limestone rubble and has been rebuilt in the 20th century at the left end. Both cottages are topped with a continuous thatched roof.
Cottage No. 41 has an ashlar limestone chimney on the right gable end and a rectangular brick stack at the left eaves. It is arranged with two storeys and two windows, featuring late 19th to early 20th century metal casements with glazing bars and large stone lintels. The central plank door has a 19th-century thumb latch and is sheltered by a metal canopy. Inside, it has a cross passage that divides the two ground floor rooms, with a spiral staircase located at the rear left.
Cottage No. 40 also has two storeys and features a single dormer with a thatched hood, which contains an early 19th-century, two-light casement with glazing bars. The ground floor has a similar casement and is additionally lit by two six-light sashes with horns. The plank door has cover strips, a 19th-century thumb latch, and a decorative 19th-century knocker, along with a metal canopy above.
In the rear garden to the left of No. 40, there is a 19th-century iron water pump made by Appleby and Co. from the Penishaw Iron Works in Chesterfield, accompanied by a stone trough. Cottage No. 40 is noted for its group value with the other structures.
