Description

This small barn, known as Pilgrims Barn, is located approximately 70 meters southeast of Beverston Castle at Castle Farm. It is believed to date from the 14th century and is constructed of random coursed and snecked rubble stone, topped with a stone slate roof that features a coped south gable and a saddlestone.

The barn has small plain buttresses that extend just below the eaves on the front, diagonal buttresses at the south end, and two raking buttresses at the rear with two stepped buttresses in between. On the west side, there is a gable that is also coped with a saddlestone and includes a chamfered stone loft opening. To the left of this, there is a chamfered stone doorway with a recessed stable door, and to the far left, a doorway with a timber lintel that has a recessed 20th-century door. Slit vents are present between and throughout the structure, complemented by large stone quoins and inner splays.

Inside, the barn consists of five bays, including one base cruck truss located to the right of center, which has small upper crucks on this truss and those on either side. The north truss and much of the roof structure have been renewed, while the purlins are likely mostly original, with a few remaining pieces of arched wind bracing that were formerly part of the lower tier on both sides. The barn is also designated as an Ancient Monument in Gloucestershire.
