Description
Hinchwick is a gentleman's country farmhouse built before 1835 and enlarged in 1937. It features coursed rubble construction with Cotswold stone roofs, showcasing a Cotswold style. The building has a gabled front with groups of four tall ashlar diagonally-shafted chimneys linked horizontally. There are two principal gables on the east side, each with coped verges, saddlestones, and kneelers, along with a central gabled dormer in a similar style. The house is 2½ storeys high over a basement and has a 1:3:1 bay arrangement. Hollow-chamfered mullioned windows are present on the projecting gabled side wings, with a string course above the basement and first floor, raised over the outer windows to act as a drip. A central single-storey porch sits between the projecting gables, featuring a catslide roof that allows for a central gabled dormer above a chamfered entrance, which is accessed by steps. The returns of the gables are irregular. Inside, the house combines features from the 1860s, such as the staircase, with elements from the Arts and Crafts movement around 1900, like the door furniture, and Queen Anne style, as seen in the gun-room. The farmhouse forms the west side of an elongated octagon, with farm buildings making up the rest of the impressive group.
