Description

South Close Cottage and the adjoining walls to Southayes Cottage date from the 16th or early 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century and modern updates. The cottage is constructed of rubble stone and is set back from the street, accessed via an alleyway that passes beneath its east end and continues to the rear walls. It has a Cotswold stone roof and plain chimneys. The first floor features three small two-light casement windows. The ground floor has an irregular arrangement of four windows and two doorways, which are modern. The alleyway on the right side is ceiled with old timbers. A gabled L-plan extension to the north serves as a coach-house for Woolcomber. Inside, the cottage has a lobby entrance and a massive chimney with a staircase attached. One timber-framed partition is exposed. The roof displays stout coupled rafters, with one truss featuring a curved collar and two levels of purlins. Rubble walls, ranging in height from 6 to 9 feet, link the cottage to Southayes Cottage to the north.
