Description

This is a barn and adjoining stable/garage built in the late 18th century, located approximately 6 meters northwest of Gawcombe House. The structure is made of coursed squared and dressed limestone, featuring finely dressed stone quoins. The barn has a concrete tile roof, while the stable/garage range is covered with stone slate.

The building has a rectangular plan with a projecting porch on the west side. An extension for the stable/garage is connected to the barn by a bridge at right angles. There is also a part-brick range at right angles on the left side, along with 20th-century farm buildings at the rear of the barn and 20th-century lean-tos attached to the stable/garage, which are not of special interest.

The barn features a two-storey gabled porch located off-centre to the right, with 20th-century double doors and a high double-width entrance on the opposite wall. There is a two-light stone-mullioned casement window in the gable of the porch, with a clock above it, and a single-width door on the right-hand return. To the left, there is a lean-to with a plank door flanked by two single-light windows with segmental heads. The barn has triangular ventilation slits in its side walls and gable ends, and stone steps lead up to the bridge connecting to the loft over the stable block on the right.

The stable block has two wide doorways with cambered heads, one of which is now blocked with a top-opening casement inserted into the blocking. There is a top-opening casement with a segmental head to the right, and a plank door leading to the loft, which is accessed via the bridge and is located in the upper left. Additional stabling and garaging can be found at the west gable end. Inside the barn, there are five bays featuring the original collar and tie beam trusses with double butt purlins.
