Description

Gawcombe House is a large house built in the late 17th century, early 18th century, and mid 19th century. It is constructed from coursed squared and dressed limestone, with a roof made of stone slate and concrete tiles, featuring ashlar stacks. The house has an 'L'-shaped plan, with the 17th-century range and an 18th-century range set parallel to one side. A 19th-century service wing is positioned at right angles to the right-hand return of the main wing, and there is a mid-19th-century extension at the rear of this wing.

The 17th-century range has two storeys and an attic, showcasing a 3-light, double-chamfered stone-mullioned casement on the ground floor, although this is mostly obscured by 20th-century extensions. The first floor features similar 2 and 3-light stone-mullioned casements. The 18th-century range is three storeys high and has a twin-gabled garden front, with two French doors on the ground floor. The original sash windows on the first and second floors have been replaced by 20th-century aluminium sashes without glazing bars. All windows and doors are set within dressed stone surrounds.

The 19th-century range is one and a half storeys tall and includes a 5-light canted bay with stone mullions and transoms on the ground floor of the garden front. Above this bay, there is a stone cross window that acts as a half dormer, with a 2-light stone-mullioned casement to the right. The left gable end features stone-mullioned cross-windows. At the rear of this range, there is a single-storey, 19th-century entrance porch extension with a canted front, which includes a plank door with fillets flanked by plain pilasters. The side walls of the porch have single-light and 2-light stone-mullioned casements, and the building is topped with flat coped gables and has gable-end and lateral stacks.
