Description

The north entrance to the Sapperton Canal Tunnel is a significant structure built between 1784 and 1789 to connect the Thames and Severn Canal. Designed by engineer Josiah Clowes, this entrance originally featured Gothic castellations, which have since been removed. It showcases a round arch made of V-joint voussoirs and a dropped triple keystone beneath a plat band. The structure is constructed from squared masonry and includes end and center pilaster strips. At the time of its completion, it was the world's longest tunnel.
