Description

The Temple to Surya and circular pool in the gardens of Sezincote House is an early 19th-century structure designed by Thomas Daniell for Sir Charles Cockerell. The temple is built on a limestone base and features a grey unpolished marble structure. On either side of the entrance, there are two Coade stone models of Brahmin bulls, dated 1814. The temple has a rectangular stepped plinth that leads up to a small square temple with an open front, supported by four engaged square columns at the corners, each adorned with rosette decoration at the top.

At the rear wall of the temple, there is a relief figure of the sun god Surya, flanked by rosettes, with the heads of seven horses depicted in relief below. The roof is stepped and pyramidal, topped with a finial. In front of the temple is a circular pool, which features curving rockery on either side and six regularly spaced indentations. Large shells are placed along the margin of the pool, and there is a central projecting feature covered with foliage in the middle of the pool.
