Description

The Orangery at Sezincote House is an orangery built between 1800 and 1805, designed by Samuel Pepys Cockerell, Thomas Daniell, and Humphry Repton. It was refaced in 1980 using reconstituted grey stone that matches the original color. The structure features a glass roof with a limestone slate roof over an octagonal room, designed in a Mogul/Hindu style. The orangery curves away in a quarter circle from the rear left of the house, ending in an octagonal room on the far left.

The facade includes an arcade of 15 pointed arches, each with double doors fitted with glazing bars, and flanked by matching glazed lights on either side. Above the doors are cusped lights with radiating glazing bars. There are stone steps leading up to the arcade on the far right, with cast iron models of Brahmin bulls at the base. The parapet features pointed merlons and pointed copper finials at intervals above the piers of the arcade. The octagonal room on the far left has a glazed double door at the front and on the left, similar to those of the arcade but with some colored glass. Engaged columns at the corners extend above the roof level, topped with ball finials. At the center of the octagonal pyramidal roof, there is a central open-sided octagonal minaret.

Inside, the octagonal room contains a Coade stone altar against the far wall, decorated with a relief of a seated god and a palm tree. An elaborate bronze lantern hangs from the center of the ceiling. Stone steps lead up to the forward-facing entrance, which also has models of Brahmin bulls at the base. The octagonal room was formerly used as an aviary for exotic birds.
