Description

Stables Cottage, located at Home Farm, was built between 1800 and 1805 by Samuel Pepys Cockerell and Thomas Daniell for Sir Charles Cockerell. This cottage is constructed from ashlar stone and features a slate roof, with coursed squared and dressed retaining walls on either side. It has a square plan and stands two storeys tall, with the lower floor elevated above the stable yard level.

The facade is symmetrical and steps up at the center, with pilasters at the corners that rise above the roof level, topped with pointed finials. The central section has a three-light casement window on the lower floor and another three-light casement above it. These windows are flanked by pilasters that extend above the roof, with pointed merlons creating a parapet in between. To the far right, there is a single light casement window with a blind doorway below, and on the far left, there is a matching blind light with a plank door beneath it. All windows are fitted with diamond leaded panes.

On either side of the cottage, the walls rise to about 5 meters in height, with a 20th-century raking buttress on the left side. In front of the cottage, there is a lead-lined semi-circular drinking trough featuring rectangular and circular sunken panels. Additionally, there may be a well at the rear of the trough, which has a fluted margin.
