Description
The grotto, located approximately 60 meters southeast of Sezincote House, was built between 1800 and 1805 by Thomas Daniell for Sir Charles Cockerell. It is constructed from ashlar limestone and has a square plan. The structure features two rectangular engaged columns with semi-circular decorative reliefs at the top and bottom, along with imposts. Above, there is a lintel with a square central keystone that has a triangle in relief. The grotto has a moulded capping and an opening at the front with stepped and curved upper corners and a keystone. Inside, there was once a rock garden with running water. The grotto is set into the side of a bank, with rockeries curving in towards it on either side.
