Description
The Church of St Mary, built in 1867, retains a 13th-century arcade and was designed by Benjamin Ferrey for Charles Shapland Whitmore. The church is constructed of coursed square rubble with a Cotswold stone roof and includes a nave, north aisle, chancel, aisle, chapel, and west tower. It features Early English and Decorated architectural styles, except for the restored north arcade, which has three cylindrical piers with scalloped capitals and pointed chamfered arches from the late 12th or early 13th century Transitional Norman period. Most of the fittings are Victorian or modern, with limited interest, except for one window by Clayton & Bell from 1867. The two-stage tower has diagonal buttresses and a broad spire behind parapets that are pierced by trefoils. Inside, there is a tub font, a 13th-century piscina in the chancel, an early 20th-century alabaster reredos, and various ledgers, 19th-century brasses, and stained glass dedicated to the Whitmore family.
