Description

The Barracks is a building that dates from the mid 17th century to early 18th century, originally constructed as a single house but divided into three during the 19th century, and now comprising two units. It is built of limestone rubble with large, roughly dressed limestone quoins and features a concrete tile roof. The building has ashlar stacks and a rectangular plan with a central stair projection at the rear.

The two-storey facade has four windows, which are lit by three and four-light double-chamfered stone-mullioned casements that have stopped hoods. The attic is illuminated by four 20th-century two-light hipped roof dormers. There are three plank doors set within flat-chamfered dressed stone surrounds, with two of the right-hand doorways likely added in the 19th century. The building has projecting twin gable-end stacks and an axial stack.

Inside, there are three Tudor-arched fireplaces, two of which are open fireplaces with bressumer beams. The interior may also feature an original wood spiral staircase and parallel spine beams. The building is reputed to have served as a barracks during the Civil War.
