Description
The Payne Memorial is a chest tomb located about 3 meters north of the cross in the churchyard of the Church of St. Kenelm in Sapperton. The earliest decipherable inscription on the tomb dates back to 1671 and is found on the west side. The memorial is made of limestone and features a flat moulded top with indented sides, while the base is not visible. The corners are panelled and adorned with a cornice and frieze. Each of the four side panels is distinct: the north side has a large oval inscription panel dated 1744, surrounded by cherubs and foliage; the east end displays a skull along with two partially obliterated carved devices; the south side features a rectangular panel with flanking carved insets; and the west end contains the inscription only. At the time of the survey in September 1984, the memorial was partially overgrown.
