Description

The Talbot Hotel is a building with a late 16th-century core, largely rebuilt in the mid-17th century and given its current early 18th-century facade. It is constructed of rubble stone with quoins, dressed stone lintels, a sill band at the second-floor level, a cornice, and a coped blocking course. The roof is Cotswold stone with stone and brick stacks. The front range is accompanied by two long rear ranges, the one to the right featuring three cross-gables and likely originally comprising several cottages.

The main front has three storeys and three windows; these are triple 8-pane and 12-pane sash windows, flanking a central semi-circular headed window. The central entrance, originally designed for pack horses, now has 20th-century glazed doors. A portico supported by wooden pillars is on the left, and two Roman Doric pilasters are on the right, with a bay filled in between. The right return wall is curved, possibly housing a newel stair around a fireplace. A ground-floor room on the left contains a 16th-century doorway in the place of a chimney, and a thick wall marks the probable original building line.

The building was recorded as a Beerhouse from 1580 and as the Talbot from 1685. A large stone water cistern, approximately 2 meters deep and 3 meters by 4 meters, is located beneath the gents' toilet in the back of the left-hand wing. A deep well with standing water is found in the cellar of the right wing. This wing contains four chimneys, some incorporating a newel stair. Adjacent to the wing is a former stable block, now a skittle alley, distinguished by a keyed oculus.
