Description
Avon House is a large house situated in a terrace within Tetbury Market Place. It was originally built in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, and has undergone restoration work in the 19th century and alterations in the mid-20th century. The house is constructed from random coursed rubble stone, with an 18th century Cotswold stone slate roof and two stone stacks. The front range is taller than the lower rear wings.
The building has three storeys, originally displaying four windows on the first floor and three on the second. The windows are now mostly leaded casements set within stone architraves with moulded mullions, transoms, and bull-nosed sills. The first-floor windows have square hood moulds, while the second-floor windows have continuous dripmoulds. A gabled dormer is present. The ground floor features 20th-century bow windows and two stone doorcases with moulded jambs and lintels. A rectangular inscription panel, featuring low-relief carving of entwined initials, is located on the second floor to the right of the facade. Decorative rainwater heads are positioned on the left side, bearing the date 1741 and the initials "W I I", which are of imported origin.
