Description

Barley Court is a former farmhouse, now a private house, dating from the early 17th century and possibly built in two stages. The building is constructed of rubble stone and features a Cotswold stone-slate roof. It has two storeys and an attic, with a long range that includes three cross gables and a central porch. The porch is supported by two wooden chamfered pillars and has a moulded wooden cornice, with a room above that features a three-light leaded iron casement and a hipped roof.

The original front door is very wide and made of oak, with two long strap hinges and chamfered and stopped timber jambs and lintel. To the right of the porch, there are three windows, which are two-light stone mullion casements with a continuous dripmould; the far right window has a 20th-century insertion. The ground floor windows are similar. The attic gables to the right and centre each have one similar window. To the left of the porch, there are two and three-light 20th-century metal casements with wood or metal mullions, under wood or concrete lintels. The attic gable on this side has a two-light renewed stone mullion window.

The rear facade windows match those on the front, and the left-hand end may have had windows added soon after the construction of the other two gables, when the central ridge stack would have originally been an end stack. The interior has not been inspected, but original beams and oak panelling are noted to remain. There is a small additional single-storey wing to the left, which has a circular structure with a conical roof, possibly a bread oven, projecting to the front.
