Description

Elmestree is a country house built in 1844 by William Brookes, featuring a connecting wing to the west added in 1884 and an additional range to the north completed in 1900. The house is constructed of coursed rubble stone and has a Cotswold stone slate roof adorned with decorative ridge tiles. It has six large stone stacks, some with multiple polygonal flues, and raised verges with kneelers and corner pinnacles supported by corbels. Designed in the Jacobean style, the house consists of a double range with an additional rear wing at right angles from 1900.

The building is two storeys high with an attic and showcases three stepped gables, each topped with a central finial and featuring a single leaded light, which together form a parapet wall at the base. The central castellated square porch, dated 1844, is two storeys tall and displays a coat of arms. There are seven windows in total, including those in the porch, featuring 2-light mullion and transom designs, with a 3-light window in the porch. The ground floor has longer windows in the same style, all with a continuous dripmould above each row. The porch features a large 4-centred moulded archway with studded double doors. To the left, there is a single-storey linking unit dated 1884, which has the initials FH on its central stepped gable, a bow front with a continuous row of mullion and transom windows, and a central double door. Elmestree is a notable example of vernacular continuity from this period.
