Description

This is a row of seven headstones located in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, approximately 4 metres west of the south porch. These monuments date from the late 18th century and are made of limestone.

From left to right, the headstones are described as follows: a) The first headstone has a segmental top featuring a winged angel's head and an oval inscription plaque, though the inscription is not legible. It has a finely carved margin with 'rufflet' decoration. b) Next is a taller rectangular headstone with a winged angel's head and foliate decoration at the top, but it also lacks a legible inscription. c) The third headstone is plain, with a partially legible inscription that includes the date 1792. d) The fourth headstone has a partially legible inscription that includes the name Thomas Dassett, along with a winged angel's head at the top and a finely carved cartouche surround featuring roses. e) The fifth headstone is dedicated to Elizabeth, the wife of Edmund Dassett, who died in 1792. It has an inscription in values and shallowly incised decoration at the top. f) The sixth headstone has a segmental top and a sunken inscription plaque with no legible inscription. It features a single winged angel's head at the top with foliate decoration below. g) Finally, the seventh headstone is dedicated to Joseph, the son of Richard Betheridge, and includes a winged angel's head at the top with a foliate surround.
