Description
This is a gatehouse and associated landscaping features dating from the 1920s. The gatehouse is constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone with dressed stone quoins, and has a stone slate roof. It has a rectangular plan. The east-facing gable end features a moulded double-width four-centred arched entrance, and above it a rectangular stone plaque with a moulded hood, and a small ventilation slit. A similar archway is present in the opposite gable end, with an oval stone plaque and ventilation slit above. A plank door is set within a ‘Tudor’-arched surround in the south wall. The gables are finished with flat coping and kneelers, and pointed finials with squared-off bases.
A wall, approximately 2.5 metres high, runs alongside the gatehouse. A cross-gabled pier, approximately 3 metres high, containing a chimney with four lancet-shaped openings on each side, is incorporated into the wall. At the south-east corner of the gatehouse, a garden seat is attached to the wall. The back of the garden seat forms a west-facing semi-circular, shell-headed alcove containing a semi-circular wooden seat, with a keystone. A band circles the back of the alcove, with a segmental stone dated and initialled '19 / M / 22' (Marling) positioned immediately above the band. Two square-headed niches, each containing a column topped with a crown, a King’s (or Queen’s) head, and an heraldic shield, are also present.
A stone flagged pathway leads from the garden seat under a pergola, now approximately 20 metres long, which is attached to the south-west corner of the gatehouse. The pergola’s structure consists of paired rubble-built cylindrical columns supporting a heavy horizontal timber framework. North of the gatehouse, a wooden railing is supported by stone piers with ball finials at regular intervals.
