Description

A pair of semi-detached villas, built in 1838-9, located on Prestbury Road, Cheltenham. They were designed by the builder Abraham Tyler, who completed numerous houses in the Pittville area. The villas are constructed with stucco over brick, featuring a hipped roof simulating slate tiles, brick and stucco party-wall stacks, and iron verandah and area railings.

The design includes a basement, two storeys, and six first-floor windows, with a single first-floor bay on the left side. Stucco detailing is present, including a first-floor band topped by three Doric pilasters between the central windows. The windows are 6/6 sash windows in plain reveals with sills, and feature Venetian shutters and S-latches at Number 50. The entrances, located at each end, are accessed by flights of roll-edged steps leading to five-panel doors with raised and fielded upper panels, flush lower panels, sidelights, and divided overlights.

Inside, the villas have outer side hallways with service ranges to the rear. The verandah displays an X and circle motif on the uprights and a continuous openwork frieze. The area railings share an X motif. Window boxes on the ground floor to the right also have an X motif.

Attached walls, approximately 2 meters high, are ramped down to piers and shared with numbers 48 and 54. These villas were built as part of a development undertaken for Joseph Pitt between 1835 and 1842, with the overall layout designed by the architect John Forbes. They appear on Merrett’s 1834 Map laid out but not yet built. Numbers 34 to 60 on Prestbury Road form a group of semi-detached villas.
