Description

A row of five houses, now shops and a bank with flats above, was built around 1818-1820, as shown on a Post Office Map of 1820. Numbers 2 and 3 were altered around 1850-1870 with shop fronts added to the ground floor, and the bank (occupying numbers 118 and 120) was given an early 20th-century ground floor. The building is constructed of brick with stucco facades, ashlar to the ground floor of the bank, and has concealed slate roofs; brick party-wall stacks are also present.

The building is four storeys high, with eight windows on the first floor (a pattern of 3:3:2). Stucco detailing includes windows on the right side and right return which have tooled surrounds, Greek Revival pediments, and acroteria. A parapet rises upwards towards the right. The first and second floors have 6/6 sash windows, taller on the first floor, while the third floor has original 3/3 sashes.

Number 1 has a late 20th-century door to the right and a glazed shop front. Number 2 has a 1970s door to the right, set within a shop front with barley-twist pilasters. Number 3 features a 6-panel door to the right with a blocked fanlight, within a similar shop front. The entrance to number 118 is angled and contains double 6-panel doors with an overlight in an architrave featuring two 3/4 engaged Ionic columns, forming part of the bank front, which projects forward with Ionic pilasters between windows. The right return has five first-floor windows with 1/1 sash windows and aprons, a frieze, and a modillion cornice, topped by a low parapet and copings.

Internally, number 1 retains upper flights of its original staircase, while numbers 2 and 3 retain their original staircases, ceiling cornices, and door surrounds above the ground floor. Dr Thomas Christie, a pupil of Dr Jenner and a pioneer in vaccination, lived at number 1.
