Description
There are three chest tombs located approximately 12 metres to the north of the Church of St Mary in Charlton Kings. The tombs include an altar-type tomb for William Finch, who died in 1819; a tea caddy type tomb for Thomas Smith, who died in 1829, and his wife Margaret, who died in 1803; and an early 19th-century chest tomb. All three tombs are made of stone. The Finch tomb features a shaped plinth, clasping fluted pilasters, a raised rectangular inscription panel, a frieze, a cornice, and a shallow pyramidal cap. The Smith tomb has clasping fluted pilasters, an enriched frieze, oval memorial tablets, and a tented capping topped with an iron urn. The early 19th-century chest tomb has a shaped plinth, clasping fluted pilasters, a fielded inscription panel with beading and a worn inscription, and a surmounting slab with cavetto under-moulding.
