Description

Eversleigh House, now a hall of residence within Cheltenham Ladies' College, is a villa dating from approximately 1837 to 1850, with later additions and alterations, including 20th-century infill at the rear. The house is constructed of stucco over brick, with a hipped slate roof, a renewed stuccoed stack on the left end, and an ashlar portico.

The building is two storeys high, featuring five first-floor windows arranged in a 2:1:2 pattern, with an additional range to the rear and on the left. Stucco detailing includes full-height Doric pilasters at the ends and front first-floor windows with cornices resting on consoles. The ground floor windows also have cornices on consoles. A plinth runs along the base of the building. The windows are predominantly 1/1 sashes throughout.

A central entrance has two roll-edged steps leading to a two-panel door with an overlight, positioned within a Doric porch. The porch features two pairs of Doric columns, a frieze with triglyphs and metopes, a cornice, and a blocking course. Rear windows are 6/6 sashes, and the staircase window is also a 6/6 sash with radial glazing to the head and margin-lights. Internal doors are four-panel doors.

Internally, original joinery and plasterwork remain, including a narrow, open-well staircase characterized by columns and bobbin balusters, and a dogleg service staircase with stick balusters. Embellished cornices include an egg-and-dart motif in the hall.

The land for Parabola Road’s development was sold in 1837, following the death of Rev Richard Skillicorne in 1834, for £50,000 to the Bayshill Estate Co. This estate also included Bayshill Road and St George’s Road.
