Description

Edenham and Westbury are a pair of semi-detached villas built around 1838, likely by builder Edward Billings. They feature stucco over brick with a concealed roof, stuccoed party-wall and end stacks, and iron balconies and railings. The buildings are two storeys high with a basement and attic, and have six first-floor windows arranged in a 3:3 pattern, with the end bays projecting forward.

Architectural details include three-quarter engaged fluted Ionic columns that rise through the ground and first floors at the ends of the projecting sections, and a continuous dentil entablature above the first floor. The ground and first-floor windows have tooled architraves, except for the outer ground-floor windows, which are set in round-arched reveals. The windows are 6/6 sashes throughout, with taller sashes on the first floor and 8/8 sashes in the basement.

The central entrances are paired and set in a projecting porch with round-arched openings supported by paired Doric pillars, topped with a cornice and a balustrade featuring latticework on the balcony. Inside the porch are part-glazed doors with sidelights and overlights.

Additional features include blind boxes on the first-floor windows and individual balconies with a double-heart-and-anthemion motif from the Carron Company. The area railings have urn finials on the stanchions.

Historically, these villas were part of the development of the area initiated by Joseph Pitt between 1825 and 1842, with the layout designed by architect John Forbes. This robust neo-Classical design is considered one of the finest examples of its type in Cheltenham. All listed buildings in Wellington Square create a cohesive group around a central grassy area.
